I caught a program on CNBC news, about 2012 doomsday survivalists who believe that the world is going to end that year.
They claim their beliefs originate from prophecies made by the ancient Maya, but it turns out, after researching a couple articles on the Maya themselves, these beliefs about the end of the world in 2012 are spun by the imaginations of Americans, more so than anything out of ancient Maya culture.

Facts About A "2012 Prophecy"

The research regarding a "2012 prophecy" made by the Maya appears to be in, and you can come to this conclusion for yourself at the following Wikipedia articles:

WIKIPEDIA - Maya Civilization.

WIKIPEDIA - 2012 Phenomen.

According to researchers of the Maya civilization that originated hundreds of years back and then existed as a culture for hundreds of years, this group never "disappeared" but instead just faded into the neighboring communities of other Central American peoples, seemingly about the same time that the Spanish arrived and began conquest.

New Age Beliefs and 2012

For the 2012 phenomenon it appears that New Agers are to blame, some reportedly claiming "secret knowledge". Considering that these are claims from the "New Age" community, what I believe is happening is their information is what the Bible would call "doctrines of demons" and warns will be widespread in the last days.

I believe the Earth is in the "last days", before the wrath of God and finally a "rebirth" of Earth, when Jesus Christ sets up his throne as "King of Kings and Lord of Lords".

Though many New Agers and 2012 Doomsday prophets don't believe in Jesus, don't believe in the Bible, and don't believe in God, they very naively point to God when they believe that the Earth is pre-destined for a cataclysmic end on Dec. 21, 2012 (for example), and then a "rebirth" and apparently a transformation of humans (who must have survived the cataclsymic end) to a more spiritual plane of existence.

What this reveals is how naive many of these people are, who believe in 2012 and choose to reject God.

People who choose to believe in "prophecies" about 2012 are not getting their information from the Bible. They are being deceived to their own destruction and will find themselves in the "lake of fire" -- unless they repent of the lies and find the truth and salvation that is only available by faith in Jesus Christ.
