What we refer to as a "car emergency kit" is actually a backpack fully stocked with food, water, and a few pieces of survival gear. You should keep this backpack stored somewhere in your car out of sight, and it should be one of the first things put together in preparing for an emergency situation (for you and your loved ones).
If you commute to work in a major city, there's a good chance that if disaster strikes, such as an earthquake, series of tornados, or a terrorist attack with a small nuclear weapon, it will happen during the work week, while you're at work. What this means is that traffic throughout the cities and suburbs is very likely going to come to a halt – and you may have to ditch your car and flee the city on foot.
That's why it's important to be prepared for this exact situation, and have a fully stocked backpack stored in the trunk of your car, complete with city maps, so that you know how to find your way home.
